4-H Learning Labs Help Meat Animal Project Youth Build Agricultural Literacy

Recent 4-H Livestock Skill-a-thons in Mondovi and Cochrane-Fountain City provided opportunities for 4-H and FFA members to learn more about how to care for and produce high quality meat animals. The events included eleven learning lab stations where youth and adults tested their knowledge about swine, beef, goats, sheep, poultry and dairy species. Each station presented a challenge to build agricultural literacy skills. For example, some of the stations asked students to identify beef cuts, label the parts of a hog, show how to ear notch a pig, safe ways to provide animal medications, types of Wisconsin cheeses, and which legs and mammary glands are most correct per species. The event served as one educational credit for the meat animal exhibitors at the Buffalo County Fair.
